Carbon Monoxide Likely Caused Crash in Which Family of 4 was Found Unresponsive in Vehicle, Police Say

A family of four—a 39-year-old man, his 29-year-old wife, their 7-year-old daughter, and their 5-year-old son—from Groton, New York, was discovered unresponsive inside their vehicle after a single-car crash on Route 363 in Binghamton, New York, around 2:20 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon, as they returned from vacation. Binghamton Police arrived to find the car stopped in the middle of the road and broke a window to extract the occupants, who were rushed to a nearby hospital but are expected to fully recover. Investigators believe the family lost consciousness due to carbon monoxide poisoning stemming from recent exhaust problems in the vehicle, highlighting the dangers of undetected vehicle malfunctions during travel.
